Like the sun-scorched undulating landscape of Death Valley which inspired the band’s name, Lovely Sand Dunes captures a hypnotic element from rock ‘n’ roll past and filters it through an array of modern-day influences to deliver a raw timeless sound.
Meet Lovely Sand Dunes
Exposed to the local rock scene due to her father being in Los Angeles bands, Claire began exploring music at an early age. Starting on the drums in school and then moving onto the guitar at age twelve, her progression into singing was an unexpected skill set that evolved a few years later. Influenced by a wide variety of musical genres including classic rock, this vocalist paired her musical talents with writing as she collaborated with Anthony for the first Lovey Sand Dunes demo. Also an avid painter, Claire’s artistry has influenced the band’s creative endeavors, including the album artwork for Unusual Times.
When Gavin was just nine years old his family took a trip to the music store for his brother and on a whim, Gavin began playing with a drum kit. What initially was thought to be a “phase” grew into a lifelong passion for music as this drummer honed in on his skills through years of playing in school honor bands and orchestra. This experience combined with his love of classic rock and metal music gave Gavin a collaborative advantage when he was invited to a garage jam session by Anthony and Claire a year after they had created the band’s first demo. The session was a success as Gavin’s drumming brought new energy to the existing tracks and has influenced songwriting on their latest album.
After observing the landscape of Death Valley during a family outing, Anthony coined the phrase ‘Lovely Sand Dunes’ thinking it would be an ideal band name in his near future. The young guitarist would spend hours each day during his late-teens developing and recording riffs and melodic tracks, inspired by classic rock, 90s rock bands, and nature. After meeting Claire at a party in 2016, Anthony soon realized her musical abilities and asked Claire to collaborate on his guitar tracks by adding her soothing vocals and lyric writing skills. This eclectic collaboration led to the band’s first demo and created the foundation for their unique sound.
